Caroline scored another finals appearance in this year’s Ericsson Open, marking her fifth of the year. During the tournament, Caroline became the first woman to hit 40 match wins this year, the earliest she has the mark since her 2011 season, and is the winningest women’s player since last year’s US Open, compiling a 63-18 record since then.

Entering as the No. 1 seed, Caroline had to quickly adapt to the clay surfaces of Bastad after competing on the grass courts of Wimbledon. She faced a tough first round opponent, Pauline Parmentier, who came fresh off of a quarterfinal run at the BRD Bucharest Open. In a tight three-set match, Caroline defeated the French Parmentier 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Her next challenge was Viktorija Golubic out of Switzerland. After a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory, Caroline became the first woman to record 40 wins in 2017. With this milestone, she carried her momentum through to the quarterfinals, conquering over Kateryna Kozlova 6-3, 6-1, and then on to the semifinals where she met Elise Mertens. After another three-set match, Caroline powered through to advance to the finals in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win.

Although Caroline fell to Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-4, who had eliminated No. 2 seed Anastasija Sevastova earlier that week, she demonstrated why she is one of the most dominant competitors in women’s tennis.
